SUPER JUNIOR-83z Debuts With Promise, a New Unit Experiment From Leeteuk and Heechul
SUPER JUNIOR-83z, the new unit by Leeteuk and Heechul, debuts on July 13 with the first mini album Promise, featuring a 1990s and 2000s band sound and a friendship-themed music video.
SUPER JUNIOR's new unit SUPER JUNIOR-83z officially debuts on July 13 with its first mini album, "Promise." Bringing together Leeteuk and Heechul, who were both born in 1983, the unit presents an album that deals with both love and friendship, drawing on the relationship built through the group's long career and the individual characters of the two members.
SUPER JUNIOR-83z is standing at the starting line as a new unit. According to multiple reports, SUPER JUNIOR-83z will release its first mini album, "Promise," through major music platforms at 6 p.m. on July 13. The music video for the title track will also be released at the same time through the SMTOWN YouTube channel.
SUPER JUNIOR-83z is a unit made up of SUPER JUNIOR members Leeteuk and Heechul. The two members foreground the fact that they were both born in 1983, and the unit name directly reflects that connection. Since SUPER JUNIOR has broadened its genres and concepts through various unit activities since debut, this pairing can be seen as a new branch that draws on a long-accumulated story within the team.
The title track, "Promise," has been introduced as a song based on the band sound of the 1990s and 2000s. It places Korean lyrics and powerful vocals at the center while combining a strong texture with a refreshing atmosphere. Considering the recent K-pop trend in which retro sounds are used not merely as reproduction, but as a device connecting generational memory with present-day performance, SUPER JUNIOR-83z's choice also aligns with the two members' history.
The music video was produced against the backdrop of a fictional "No. 83 bus." According to reports, including Newsen coverage, it tells a friendship story in which two people who were close friends during their school days meet again after time has passed. Leeteuk and Heechul reportedly took on emotional acting, while also contributing ideas to the music video and on-set performance. It was also reported that staff from Walala Studio, including SUPER JUNIOR member Shindong, participated in the direction.
The album consists of six tracks. In addition to the title song, it includes "SOLOVE," which compares love to the sun; "ONSAEMIRO," which carries a message about staying by each other's side; and "More Than Love," a song about deep friendship. The album also includes Leeteuk's solo track "Bad Name" and Heechul's solo track "GODOGNAM," placing unit songs and individual songs together within the same release.
One point worth noting is that the two members contributed ideas across the project, including the concept, lyrics for included tracks and acting in the music video. This can be read as a direction that reflects the members' relationship and tastes within the structure of the album, rather than simply presenting a project-style unit. However, it is difficult to determine from the currently released reports whether the unit will continue long-term activities or what follow-up schedules may look like. What has been confirmed is the release of the first mini album, the music video, and a debut concept centered on love and friendship.
